January News: Saint Valentines Day

We celebrate Valentines Day each year by exchanging cards, giving flowers and sharing gifts - It’s a fun holiday, but how did it start?

It is said that the celebrations derived from both Christian & Roman ancient tradition of the Lupercalia festival, a fertility festival. Following the rise of Christianity in Europe, many pagan holidays were renamed for and dedicated to the early Christian martyrs. Lupercalia was no exception. In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius turned Lupercalia into a Christian feast day and proclaimed it to be the feast day in honor of Saint Valentine, a Roman martyr who lived in the 3rd century. It is this St. Valentine whom the modern Valentine's Day honors.
