December News: How to Make a Christmas Wreath

One of the most festive sights around this time of year is the traditional Christmas wreath hanging on doors and making a fabulous addition to your table setting. Wreaths in this form have a long history and much symbolism associated to them – they’ve been used by many cultures in a number of forms over many years.

The type of wreath typically associated with Christmas are usually made from evergreens which survive even the harshest Winters. Of course, here in Australia we have an abundance of native flowers at this time of year and our biggest problem is keeping the wreath fresh during the long hot days!

Making your own wreath is a great Christmas project. With the right tools, some patience and nimble fingers, and by following our steps, you too could have a great looking door or table decoration.

Of course, if you don’t have time (or the patience) just give us a call on 02 9451 9911 and we’ll be glad to have one of our award winning florists design one especially for you.

Instructions

Start with a vine wreath frame as shown in the image.

Use some Dodda vine to wrap around the top of the wreath frame and connect with wire at the back.

Image Step 3.
Gather the tools you need – good scissors and a glue gun for affixing the decorations.

Image Step 4.
Heat up your glue gun. Then cut up pieces of native flowers, nuts and general festive decorations that you want to place on the wreath.

Image Step 5.
Glue your chosen flowers and decorations onto the wreath frame.

TIP: Take some time to think about where you want to place them. Play around with the placement and see what looks best before gluing into place.

Make bows with wire (as pictured).

Glue bows onto the wreath frame for those final touches.

Congratulations .... You've finished!

You’ve now got a beautiful wreath to hang on your door or place onto your Christmas table.

ROBYNS NEST TIP:
If creating a wreath on a frame as we have here, this is better suited as door decoration as it will dry out naturally and continue to look great for some time. If you are using as a table decoration you can use a wreath frame with oasis which will allow the flowers to keep fresher for longer.
